How to get a good morning workout

How to Make the Most of your Morning Workout

Amon Fearon - July 28, 2021

Getting up early for a workout isn’t always easy so if you’re going to take the plunge and do it, you want to make sure it’s worthwhile. Luckily, at this time of year, the lighter mornings make it that bit easier to part from your duvet and head outside. The combination of sunlight and endorphin-inducing exercises and you’re in for the perfect start to the day, right? Well, it’s only perfect if you make the most of your morning routine, which is why we’ve put together 5 ways to ensure you’re reaping the benefits of being an early bird.

Get a good night’s sleep

It’s always important to get enough sleep but even more so when you’re getting up early for a workout. Try to aim for 7-9 hours to avoid falling asleep mid-exercise. A good night’s sleep can really benefit your performance. As well as making you feel more energised and motivated, it also gives your muscles time to repair and recover in between workouts, meaning you’ll be more productive in the long run.

Eat beforehand

Exercising on an empty stomach can leave you feeling tired and demotivated, whereas eating before a workout can leave you feeling energised and raring to go. To make sure you feel the latter, have something to eat before you get started. A mix of protein and carbs will help you to perform to your best ability. Not usually an early eater? Something as simple as a banana will give you that much-needed boost of energy first thing.

Plan your workout

Planning your workout ahead of time means you can spend those extra few minutes in bed rather than debating which exercise or route to take on a morning. But when it comes to planning, make sure you vary it up. Doing the same routine every single day can lead to boredom which can lead to a lack of motivation to get up and exercise. You want to associate exercise with excitement so take different routes and target different muscles to make your routine more enjoyable.

Warm up

Warming up is so important. Although it might seem unnecessary, it can in fact have a big impact on your performance. Along with physically warming up your muscles to prepare them for the more strenuous exercises to come, it also improves elasticity, prevents injury, reduces pain and encourages the flow of oxygen to your muscles so they can contract and relax easier. Stay hydrated

Staying hydrated can have a significant impact on your performance. Make sure you have a drink when you get up and before you start working out, as well as during and after exercise. Without any fluids, you risk dehydration and feeling lightheaded and dizzy, which in turn will affect your workout and limit how long and how much you can do.

Get your clothes ready

Rushing around trying to find something appropriate to wear is not how you want to start your morning, especially if you’re limited for time. Make sure you’re prepared by getting your clothes ready the night before so you can switch off your alarm and put them straight on. Check the weather beforehand too so you can choose the correct clothing depending on the conditions. 1/4 zips and hoodies are good staples for most occasions.
